Few notes: Spires give way to water towers as landmarks as the spires get smaller and squarer. Noticed it 2 days ago. Roof tiles have moved from slate to Roman. Yep another great route to the new destination of Thiviers. Morning damp and low light as we ride alongside the Vienne river in search for a tabac and some coffee. Nix coffee monster emerges at the 2nd town where the tabac is closed. Stop at 3rd town on hill where a poodle is the propieter.
a sacrifice to quell the coffee monster
Nicki's knee a little better. Find a fantastic C road to Thiviers that means the day is only a little longer than planned (90ish km). Come into Thiviers through an industrial area not giving the best first impression and up a street of thick pollarded trees where I imagine a Roman procession with elephants in Asterix style. Hotel de France et Russe is fantastic and we are warmly welcomed by an Englishman. Place run by English lady - "Jolly good" she says. Room is great. Thiviers itself is very pleasant and next morning pass through the setting up of the Saturday market.

We managed to get a room to stay in tonight - just! It is the bank holiday weekend here and there was nowhere to stay. Had to divert to Thiviers instead of staying in St Jean de Cole. Went to lovely pizzeria and had omelettes. Slight climbing. Generally flat.
We stayed at:

Cycling today [Nixter draws a squiggle in her journal]. Lots of up and lots of down. Some great Perigord/Dordogne countryside. Very hungry today. Left early at 7:15am without brekky.
our standard diet
Ate it on the road and stopped in La Peruse in a tabac or a couple of coffees. Lunch by the church on Richard the Lionheart near route.
downtown Les Salles Lavauguyon
on the path of Richard the Lionheart (yeah right)
Long slog into Thiviers where we're staying because there is no accommodation left in St Pierre du Cole owing to the Salon de Fleur festival! A minor diversion, and hotel exceptionally good considering we'd been wandering if we might just end up sleeping outside tonight! A gorgeous but very reasonable hotel of 58Euro for the room. It was carpeted - so nice to feel carpet under the feet - a very English thing I think. The hotel was owned and run by an English lady who took it over from her aunt. Had the cheapest meal to date at 21Euro for the 3 of us - and quite possibly the biggest too. A gigantine omelette and frites. My body was saying yes to eggs.
